MotoGP may be looking to cancel the Qatar Grand Prix amid ongoing tension in the Middle East

The race might be cancelled with no replacement as a result of the geopolitical situation in the region.

The race is meant to go ahead in November but the date is fast approaching and tensions in the area are not easing. Arranging a replacement in time would be quite difficult so if the race were to be cancelled it is likely there would not be a track to stand in.

The race in Qatar was meant to take please in April when the schedule was first announced, however it was moved back to November following the initial outbreaks between Iran and the USA.

Not only will this affect this year but the ongoing situation in the Middle East looks like it will affect the 2027 calendar if it still looks like the region will be unsafe to travel to. CEO Carlos Ezpeleta has revealed they can not finalise 2027’s schedule just yet as they need to see how the situation in the Middle East evolves, although he believes they are “probably a couple or three weeks away from being able to announce [the 2027 calendar].”

Reducing this seasons championship by one round could have a major impact on the title race between Jorge Martin, Marco Bezzecchi, Ai Ogura and Marc Marquez. Martin currently leads by 31 points over Bezzecchi with 240 points to 209 points. Ogura trails behind with 203 points and Marquez has exactly 200. Removing this round with no replacement would leave 37 fewer points on offer.

A decision to cancel might not only affect Motogp as Formula One is also meant to be racing in Qatar in late November.
